Race Day

We woke up on race day to downed trees, high winds, and threats that the race was going to be cancelled. A storm had blown through over the night and highways were blocked by trees. The state troopers got to work though and we were all ready to go with just a half hour delay to the start time. We each had 10 miles (3 person relay) to run. The race went from Hilo (sea level) to Volcano (4000 ft). Jeff took the first leg. He is standing in the back of the crowd at the start. We drove along with the kids, stopping for snacks and playgrounds along the way. While I was running the boys practiced football and climbing. They had a fun day. There was lunch at the end of the race in Volcano Village and the boys loaded up on soup, oranges, and chocolate. After the race we toured the rim of Kilauea in the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Windy starting line up but the winds died down quickly.

Mom's first leg. 1000 ft up over 5 miles!

Tackle football.

Our cool medals.

There is hot lava down there! We went on a short hike and had a good tour guide.

Smoke coming off the crater.
