Next we were on the search for the hot lava. First we started at the Pahoa transfer station that had been inundated before Christmas. The lava has hardened in that area, but it is still warm and rainwater getting into the cracks comes back out as steam. Although the lava is no longer flowing there, the size and thickness of the flow was quite impressive. Next we tried to get to the active flow, but the area is blocked off and guarded with National Guard folks, so no such luck. Next we stopped at the airport to renew our rental car and saw Air Force One. Obama was somewhere in the area! It was Ken's diner for a Loco Moco for lunch in Hilo. Then we headed to Honoli'i beach park to look for sea glass. This is the surfer beach and it is a neat spot. A river flows into the ocean here and the scenery is quite pretty. After this we headed up to Rainbow Falls for exploring (I had a bad cold and took a nap in the car) and back to Hilo for a visit to the candy store and the Big Island Running Company to pick up our race bibs for the race the next day.
