The next day we packed our bags and headed back north. We explored the Hilo coast, had a fresh sushi lunch in downtown Hilo, and then took the saddle road over to Waikaloa Village where our condo was for the last six days of our trip. The boys were excited to find a pool and a hot tub (oceans are salty, messy, and a lot of work by comparison!). We went up Mona Loa that evening to check out the sunset and the stars at the big observatory. We met some friends from Fairbanks and had a picnic dinner as the sun set over the ocean. We were above the clouds and it was windy and in the 40s! The stars were hard to see that night because of the full moon, but we checked out some telescopes and listened to the star tour before heading back down to our condo for tv and popcorn. Nice and relaxing!
Wave rounded boulders on the Hilo coast.
Rolls made fresh for us by a guy in a shop on Hilo's main street.
Hot tub time! It was solar heated so cold in the morning and PIPING HOT at night!
Chair with remote control at the condo. This is awesome!
Trouping up the mountain with our friends to watch sunset.
Bundled up on Mona Loa,
Now this is vacation!
