Permafrost Tunnel

Jeff and Jack went on a field trip to the permafrost tunnel this weekend. There is discontinuous permafrost around Fairbanks. Silts were frozen during the last glacial period and some remain frozen today. In the tunnel, one can see fossils of mammoths and other Pleistocene animals as well as frozen lakes and sediments. Some of the lake sediments were thawed and Pleistocene bacteria came back to life!

Bundled up for the cold.

With Clara and Owen inside the tunnel.

Jack and Owen show off some Pleistocene megafauna.
